Alkanes and alkenes – building and cracking formulae

A resource to encourage students to think about the general and molecular formulae of organic compounds, focussing on alkanes and alkenes in particular. It provides an opportunity to practise drawing displayed structural formulae.

It is suitable for individuals, revision, lesson consolidation or homework.

Many thanks for your comment. We've looked across the specs and there are some differences in the use of the terms structural and displayed formula. As a compromise, we've added 'fully displayed' to the tables. We hope this suits across the specifications.

The resource is a good worksheet to use after the topic has been taught. However the use of the word “structural formula” is incorrect. You are actually asking for the “displayed formula”. IGCSE require both. I can’t change it on the PDF so it would help if it was changed on the actual document.
