A KS3 resource for the evolution unit. It helps to illustrate that pollution can affect the distribution of organisms such as lichens. Lichens can be used to show the amount of pollution as they can be used as indicator species.
The resource provides students with the results of a study into the distribution of lichen radiating from a city centre. Students can draw a graph and conclusions about the effects of air pollution on the distribution of lichens.
Answers are included and there is an extension activity.
There is a simple PDF identification guide for students to use to identify lichens around the school or at home.
