Elements, compounds and mixtures worksheet
A KS3 chemistry worksheet with background information to get students thinking about the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures. It includes a variety of short tasks that will appeal to a wide range of learners.
In the first two tasks, students define ‘element’, ‘compound’ and ‘mixture’ using a short text to help them and then provide examples. In task 3, they sort substances into the three categories and then identify the elements and compounds from their chemical formulae. Task 4 involves matching separation techniques to the type of mixture that each can separate. In task 5, students use particle diagrams to identify substances as elements, compounds or mixtures. Finally, they identify how many elements there are in some common compounds.
An answer sheet is provided.
The background information from task 1:
Elements are the building blocks of life. There are over 100 elements that are arranged in the periodic table. An element contains only a single type of atom. If these elements bond together, we call them a compound. They require energy to form and break the bonds. If we have two or more elements and compounds occupying the same space, we call this a mixture. A mixture can easily be separated using a separation technique.
